Gounod’s Faust– New Production
December 17, 2011
With Jonas Kaufmann in the title role, René Pape as the devil, and Angela Gheorghiu as Marguerite, Gounod’s classic retelling of the Faust legend couldn’t be better served. Tony Award-winning director Des McAnuff updates the story to the first half of the 20th century with a production that won praise in London last season. A later run features another first-tier Faust cast: Roberto Alagna, Joseph Calleja, Marina Poplavskaya, and Ferruccio Furlanetto. Yannick Nézet-Séguin conducts on the heels of his Don Carlo success.

Legendary South African trumpeter Hugh Masekela’s highly anticipated North American tour is making only two stops in New York this October – and one of them is at the Westhampton Beach Performing Arts Center on Sunday, October 17 at 8:00pm following a performance at Carnegie Hall the night before. Tickets are $70, $55 and $40.
When "world music" was still just a concept, a young trumpet player emerged from apartheid South Africa and landed alongside some of America's musical icons - Louis Armstrong, Harry Belafonte, Dizzy Gillespie & Miles Davis - all of whom eventually took him under their wings. With his vibrant trumpet and flugelhorn solos, Masekela has been featured on pop, R&B, disco, Afro-pop and jazz recordings ever since. He’s collaborated with some of the world's foremost performers, such as Stevie Wonder, Bob Marley, Simply Red and Paul Simon and played an integral role in Paul Simon’s Graceland tour. He also co-created the smash-hit Broadway musical Sarafina, for which he was nominated for a Tony Award in 1988.
Masekela performed his Grammy Award-winning global hit “Grazing in the Grass” at the World Cup opening ceremonies this year and astounded a new generation who has never heard this immense talent. Hailed around the world for his stunning live performances, Masekela brings to life the connection between his African sound and his musical alliance with the original American classical music: Jazz. He plans to dazzle the audience with all-time favorite hits like “Stimela,” “Thanayi,” “Happy Mama,” “Lady” and, of course, “Grazing in the Grass.”
Articulate and brilliantly musical in a number of genres, Hugh Masekela has been a defining force in world music and the struggle for human rights both in Africa and around the world. A living legend and genius musician, Hugh connects with his audiences and believes, "You gotta' make them feel good!"

On Memorial Day Weekend Vered Gallery featured its first ever solo exhibition of the work of international sensation Fernando Botero. Botero: Paintings and Sculptures opened Friday, May 28th and will remain on display in the gallery until Tuesday, June 22nd. The exhibition will include mammoth paintings and sculptures from the master artist as well as some smaller paintings, sculptures and works on paper spanning four decades of the artist's career. Included in the exhibition are twenty works that exemplify many of Botero's most familiar themes including nudes, dancers and animals.

Columbian artist Fernando Botero’s unique style is recognized and renowned world-wide for the voluminous forms and sensuous figures found within his paintings, sculpture and works on paper. The monumentality of his images has made his work instantly recognizable.
I studied the art of Giotto and all other Italian Masters, I was fascinated by their sense of volume and monumentality, of course in modern art everything is exaggerated – so my voluminous figures also became exaggerated. (Botero)
Botero’s monumental sculptures have lined Park Avenue, graced Berlin’s Lustgarten, been exhibited in San Antonio, paraded on the Champs Elysses, graced the streets of Sevilla and delight vacationers at the Grand Wailea resort in Hawaii
Also on display in Gallery II will be original works by Avery, Chagall, de Kooning, Fischl, Man Ray, Picasso, Porter, Rauschenberg, Rivers, Stern, Warhol and others.

This riveting play about the lives of eight people hiding from the Nazis in a concealed space above a warehouse, allows audiences to feel their claustrophobic existence, their hopes, their fears and their indomitable will to survive. In addition to the performance, a Holocaust survivor will participate as part of the discussion following each performance.
